Our reading today describes an argument between Jesus and the Sadducees, not his usual opponents—the Pharisees. That would be weird enough, but it just scratches the surface of all the strange things going on in this exchange between Jesus and the Temple big shots. We’ll take a close look at all of it, today!

  • One of the strange things about this story is that the Sadducees attempt to trip Jesus up about marriage in the afterlife, an existence which they don’t even believe in. What might this indicate about the Sadducees’ true goal in this conversation with Jesus?
  • What do you believe about the afterlife? What do you think actually happens when we die? Is Jesus really giving us a look at how everything will be dealt with in heaven, or is he talking about something else? And if he is, then what?
  • Part of the limitations on our imaginations is that we cannot, in this life, escape time. We are ceaselessly aware that the clock is ticking. How does this reality affect your appreciation of life in the here-and-now. After death?

Next Step: In this life, the clock really is ticking. How are you using your time? To what purpose are you giving the most time? What can our use of time say about our spiritual health? And, once we know, what are we prepared to do about it?
