This passage of John might seem a bit out-of-place thematically until we look at the key motivating force behind Jesus’ journey to the cross. Today we’re going to zero in on the main theme of the text—love—and see what we can tease out of the best known passage in the Bible. Let’s begin!

  • If you were to boil down the entire Bible into one idea or theme, what would it be? How would it compare with the passage we’re looking at today?

  • One of the interesting characters in this story is Nicodemus. What can you deduce about the quality of his faith in and understanding about Jesus from what he says? From a faith perspective, how are you similar/dissimilar to him?

  • John’s Gospel doesn’t talk about miracles, but signs—things that point to the character, identity and saving intention of God. How do the signs of God’s love reveal the kind of relationship God wants to have with us?

Next Step: The point of this reading is that love “reigns supreme” in the life God offers us. Think about the signs of God’s love evident in your life. Which mean the most to you? Think of ways you can share some of these with others.
