On this fifth Sunday after Pentecost, we are taking a closer look at the conclusion of Jesus’ mission discourse to the twelve disciples/apostles and what Jesus’ words mean for us today.

  • What does Jesus mean when he says whoever welcomes or receives the disciples welcomes/receives Jesus as well?

  • What do you think is the reward of a prophet and a righteous person?

  • Why was generosity towards children during the first century significant for Jesus and important in the kingdom of God?

  • When you read this passage, do you view yourself as one of the disciples sharing the good news or the person receiving the good news? Why?

  • Modern evangelism has placed the focus of “successful” evangelism on conversion, but what Jesus’ words seem to indicate about “successful” evangelism?

Next Steps: The words you say and actions you display is what ultimately helps nonbelievers decide if they are open to welcoming Jesus into their lives or not. Take some time this week to discern if there are any aspects of your worldview that may prevent nonbelievers from seeing you as a messenger of the gospel of Jesus. If there is anything, reach out to someone that you trust this week and invite them to help you reform that aspect of your worldview.
