On this first Sunday of Christmas, we are reminded of what can happen when the powers of this world come into conflict with the power and mission of God. This week’s reading from the Gospel of Matthew focuses on how God delivered Joseph, Mary, and infant Jesus from death as King Herod sought to kill the child who he perceived as a threat to his reign.

  • When have you felt like life or the world has been against you? How did God show up in that situation/circumstance?

  • In this passage alone, Matthew shares with us readers that two events happened to fulfill Old Testament prophecy: Herod committing infanticide and Joseph establishing their home base in Nazareth of Galilee. Why is Jesus’ life being the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy significant for you?

  • Imagine if you were told that someone wanted to kill one your family members. What would you think/feel if you had to pack up belongings overnight and move to a country you did not know?

Next Step: This first week of Christmas, consider the struggles you are currently facing. Just as God showed up for Joseph and Mary, how can you see God currently moving amid your struggles? If you cannot see God moving, where can you find hope as you wait for God to move?
